Updated: 2020–01–20
SURAT: A 112-year-old wooden house on Darukhana Road in Galemandi area of Begumpura area of the city was gutted on Friday evening. Doors and windows of two adjacent houses also caught fire and six people from these houses were brought out safely.
Fire officials said as they started to spray water to douse the fire which had engulfed the ground floor, its first floor collapsed. The house is owned by Anita Javerbhai Mavani and Vanmalidas Manekchand and other family members. Only a woman was in the house when the fire started. She ran out before the fire could spread. The other four members of the family, who live in this house, were out. There were no casualties. The cause of fire is not known.
These types of constructions are about 60 feet long and 20 feet wide and there is no space between two walls. A large crowd at the spot alleged that the fire department took half an hour to reach the spot. One of the neighbours, angry with fire officials, was taken away by people.
