Narrow escape for 30 passengers as Bengaluru-bound bus catches fire

BELAGAVI: As many as 30 passengers had a narrow escape when the Bengaluru-bound NWKRTC bus they were travelling in caught fire near Hiriyur toll gate in Chitradurga district early on Tuesday.
The AC sleeper coach bus which departed from Belagavi depot at 8pm on Monday caught fire around 4am.
Fortunately, all the 30 passengers were evacuated to safety and were ferried to Bengaluru in another bus.
Belagavi divisional controller Mahadev Munji told TOI that as soon as the driver and conductor detected smoke emanating from the bus engine, they asked the passengers to disembark from the bus.
“Initially, there was some smoke and the toll officials urged the driver to move the bus. Later, the blaze engulfed the entire vehicle,” Munji said adding a probe will be initiated to find out the cause of fire.
