Sub-station blaze causes industry to lose Rs 1,000 crore

Updated: 2012-05-27-05:00

LUDHIANA: The fire at the Lalton power sub-station has left the residents in a tizzy on one hand and on the other, it has caused production losses to the tune of Rs 1,000 crore to the industry.

Badish Jindal, president, Federation of Punjab Small Industries Associations (FOPSIA) said, ”Gutting of the sub-station has affected the city’s industry most.”

The absence of power supply since Friday has resulted in a production loss of Rs 1,000 crore. Fire at a 220kV sub station should be taken seriously. An inquiry should be conducted to find out if the incident occurred due to lack of maintenance or use of sub-standard material, he added.

Chairman, Ludhiana Knitwear Club, Vinod Thapar corroborated to the fact saying, ”There has been a loss of over Rs 200 crore in hosiery industry’s turn over since Friday. I also couldn’t send a consignment due for export.”

Trouble to last

PSPCL chief engineer K L Sharma said the problem would be partially solved by Sunday, but power supply would normalize only by Tuesday.
