Fire hits Sangkhlaburi market
Updated: 2020–05–26
KANCHANABURI: A fire broke out at the fresh market in the Tambon Wang Ka Municipality in Sangkhlaburi district on Tuesday morning, causing about 30 million baht of damage. There were no casualties, police said.
Noina Sutha-anong, who lives in a house near the market, told police that she woke up at about 1.30am after hearing a loud noise from the market.
When she went out of her house to take a look, the market was already in flames. She called 191.
Three fire engines — two from the Tambon Wang Ka Municipality and one from Tambon Nong Lu Municipality — arrived about 30 minutes later. By that time, the fire had engulfed the market, a large wooden structure with corrugated metal roofing sheets built about 30 years ago.
The fire was brought under control in about two hours, leaving the market completely destroyed, along with traders’ goods and property.
Netima Worachokchotikul, the owner of a shop selling locally-made clothes, said she and her family had run the business at the market for about 30 years. The family suffered a huge loss, having invested about 900,000 baht on new clothes, believing that tourists would soon return after the Covid-19 situation had improved. All the clothes went up in flames, she said.
Yuthachak Kaewchan, deputy mayor of the Tambon Wang Ka Municipality, said officials would examine the damage on Tuesday morning and measures would be taken to help people affected by the fire. The damage was estimated at 30 million baht, he added.
The cause of the fire was being investigated.
