SONGKHLA: A fire damaged a building under construction on the Prince of Songkla University’s Hat Yai campus late on Sunday night.
The building will have 16 floors and be used as the technology centre for the university’s faculty of medicine. Construction has reached the 9th floor.
Pol Col Saksit Meesaeng, the Kho Hong police chief, said the fire began about 10pm in the new building’s elevator area and spread quickly up the shaft to the 9th floor. The flames lit up the dark monsoon sky over Hat Yai, and the glow was visible from some distance away.
Doctors and nurses in nearby dormitories rushed outside to watch the fire.
Fire engines and crews from Kho Hong and Hat Yai municipalities took about one hour to put it out.
Nobody was hurt.
The cause of the fire was being investigated.
