Fire at commercial complex at Burrabazar in Kolkata

KOLKATA: A fire broke out at a four-storey commercial complex at the crossing of Brabourne Road and Canning Street in Burrabazar on Sunday morning gutting a number of shops and sending panic waves across the entire locality. However, since the market was closed on Sunday, there were no employees or customers around that prevented any casualty or injury.

According to locals, thick black fumes started billowing out of the window of a first floor shop around 9.50am. The locals immediately called the cops and informed the fire brigade. But within no time, the fire reached the third floor as lashing flames could be seen from multiple windows of the building from outside.

The fire started from a first floor shop and soon headed upwards engulfing other floors and shops of the building in the process. The building was stacked with combustible items that further fueled the fire.

However, we were able to get the fire under control within one and half hours,” said a senior official of the fire and emergency department.

As per the new Covid protocols, firemen are advised to avoid contact with strangers as much as possible even while fighting a fire. And hence, while people at Burrabazar – that has experienced a number of fires in the last few years – who are used to jump to help the firemen in tackling an emergency were asked to stay at a distance as firemen themselves kept fighting the flames. To aid them, a large team of disaster management group personnel were also present at the site.

Fire officials said Sunday’s fire started from a godown that was stacked with plastic goods. The shop was entirely gutted but the reason behind the fire could not be established yet.
