1 dead as fire guts heritage house in Vigan
Updated: 2020–02–26
One person was killed when a fire gutted a heritage house behind the historic Calle Crisologo in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur, early Wednesday morning.
Ilocos Sur Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office chief Michael Chan told Super Radyo dzBB that the fire broke out at around 8:28 a.m.
A YouScooper said the house was along General Luna corner Plaridel Street.
The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said the fire ravaged the house quickly as it was made of light materials.
Chan said “fire out” was declared at around 11 a.m.
He added that two residents were inside the house when the fire broke out.
The fatality, identified as Eric Hernandez, was reportedly asleep during the incident.
“Habang nilalabanan ‘yong apoy nilabas na [siya] ng mga kasamahan nating BFP… sunog din po e. Mga third-degree burn na ‘yong katawan,” Chan said.
The victim’s female companion was rescued by the BFP.
Chan explained that the fire did not spread to its neighboring houses because one had a firewall while the other was made of bricks.
Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the fire. —Julia Mari Ornedo/KBK, GMA News
