Sarawak Gov’t Identifies Location To Resettle Sibu Fire Victims
Updated: 2013-06-20-14:47
KUCHING, June 20 (Bernama) — The Sarawak government has identified a site near Bandong Road in Sibu to resettle some 700 residents of Kampung Datuk who lost their homes in a fire yesterday, Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said today.

He said the resettlement site was located several kilometres downstream of the over one-century-old Malay village and wanted the process to be expedited in order to lighten the burden faced by the fire victims.

“(I wish to express) my regrets that the fire had demolished the houses in Sibu yesterday and I am sending my deputy (chief minister) (Tan Sri Alfred Jabu) to Sibu today to check on what we can do and to alleviate some of their (the victims’) suffering,” he told reporters here.

Meanwhile, Bernama learnt that the Sibu Divisional Disaster Relief Committee is continuing to register the fire victims and that, as of 10 today, a total of 713 fire victims had been identified and were currently being sheltered at a school hall.

While the actual number of houses had yet to be ascertained, sources told Bernama that more than 100 homes were destroyed in the fire which started at 3.30 pm yesterday.
