SALEM: A major fire broke out in a truck garage near Seelanaickenpatty in Salem city on early Sunday morning. Material and vehicles worth several lakh were gutted in the fire.
V Dhanapal, 48, of Kondalampatty owned the garage at Kattur area in the city. He closed the garage as usual on Saturday night at 9.30. Morning walkers, who witnessed fire in the garage at 5 am, alerted Shevapet fire station following which fire and rescue services personnel rushed to the spot.
C Kalaiselvam, fire station officer, said, “The fire started spreading to nearby shops. Two shops — a tyre puncture shop and a building construction materials shop were affected.”
Two cars parked inside the garage and accessories of various vehicles, including the trucks worth several lakh were gutted in the fire,” the officer said.
He added that the materials stored in the neighbouring shops were also on fire.
Annadhanapatty police registered a case and initiated an inquiry.
