Sixteen dead, 48 injured in Meng Mao explosion
Updated: 2019–03–25
Sixteen people died and 48 were injured in an explosion in Mine Maw in the Wa self-administered region of Shan State on Saturday, according to the United Wa State Army (UWSA).
The explosion happened in a building used to store gas cylinders and dynamite used for construction in Meng Mao, which is more than 161 kilometres from Panghsang township in north-eastern Shan, Wa spokesperson U Nyi Rang said.
“We think the blast happened when explosives were being transported near the site and may have included gas cylinders and dynamite, but it’s still being investigated,” he said.
Panghsang, where the UWSA is headquartered, will be the site of a ceremony from April 14 to 17 to mark the 30th anniversary of the 1989 ceasefire and peace agreement between the government and the ethnic Wa.
In addition to Panghsang, preparations for the celebration are being made in Mine Maw, which is under the control of the UWSA, said U Than Soe Naing, an ethnic-affairs expert.
