Fire breaks out in Kolkata’s Kestopur, 15 makeshift shops gutted

KOLKATA: Around 15 makeshift shops beside Bagjola canal at Gauranganagar in Kestopur were gutted after a fire broke out in the area at around 5.30am on Wednesday.
Five fire tenders rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control. No injuries reported as of yet.
Fire officials also suspect a short circuit in the overhead electrical wires, because of rampant hooking and tapping in the area, as cause of fire.
“Its too early to identify the source of fire but seeing the condition of the electrical wires, it is evident that several of these shops had been illegally drawing electricity from the poles and the fire may have started from them after a short circuit. We have also informed the matter to the police electricity providers in the area,” a senior Bidhannagar fire official said.
Incidentally a similar fire had gutted over 12 shops at Jagatpur in Keshtopur, a few blocks away from Wednesday’s blaze zone, last month.
