Fire erupts at Kamarpotti market in Khilgaon
Updated: 2019–04–04
A fire has swept through the Kamarpotti market adjoining the Khilgaon Rail Gate, adding to the recent spate of fire incidents that are fresh in the public mind.
The incident occurred around 3am on Thursday, said Mahfuz Biren, an official of the fire service’s control room.
Fifteen units of the fire service tamed the flames after three hours of efforts.
The fire service has yet to determine the source of the fire.
There are about 1,300 shops crammed in a congested area beside the railway track, said, Mahfuz. Over a dozen shops were gutted by the fire.
But the fire service official was unable to provide an estimate of the damages incurred in the fire. There have not been any reported casualties in the incident.
Within a month of the blaze in Chawkbazar’s Churihatta, leaving 71 people dead, 26 were killed in a fire that engulfed the 23-storey FR Tower in Banani on Mar 28.
The incidents brought the issue of fire safety to the forefront of public discourse.
And two days after the incident in Banani, another fire ravaged a makeshift market next to the DNCC Market in Gulshan-1.
