Fire breaks out at godown in Shilphata, illegal shops gutted

THANE: Illegal godown were gutted in a fire that sparked off in a commercial complex at Shilphata in Mumbra at 10:45am on Thursday.
A senior fire official said that they were alerted by locals about the blaze. The officials immediately rushed to the spot within minutes. However, by the time the team reached the place, the fire had spread. As there were many godowns which supplied wood and plastic scrap, the fire spread rapidly.
Luckily, no casualty was reported in the incident. The quantum of damage is yet to be ascertained. The fire officials said that they will investigate the matter, but have initially suspected that it could have been triggered by a short circuit.
“The premises had a number of godowns and most of them were adjoining each other. Most of these were constructed without permission and was used to stock plastic and wood scrap. The fire was spreading fast and it was a challenge for us to control it before it spread to neighbouring areas. Two godowns suffered maximum damage. It took us over three hours to bring the fire under control,” said M R Mishra, officer at Mumbra fire brigade.
The continous incidents of fire being reported in the illegal godowns has made the residents a worried lot. They have now asked the Thane municipal corporation to take stern action against all these illegal structures.
