Bhopal cops in heroic rescue act after fire breaks out in hospital

BHOPAL: Two policemen turned out to be angels in khaki when a hospital in Nishatpura caught fire on Friday afternoon. They not only carried patients to safety but also had the presence of mind to call a crane and demolish part of the wall so that the smoke would escape and the building wouldn’t turn into a gas chamber.
Fire broke out in the operation theatre of the hospital on Karond Bypass Road around 2pm. Within minutes, thick, black smoke started spreading through the building.
Constable Nagendra Singh was patrolling his beat when he saw smoke billowing out of the hospital. “I ran inside and saw that heavy smoke had already filled the building. It was difficult to see and breathe. I covered my face with a cloth and ran up the stairs,” he said.
His colleague, constable Sundar Singh Rajput, had also seen the fire and joined him. Nagendra said that when they reached upstairs, they found two patients lying in bed in a room next to the smoke-filled OT. “They were having difficulty breathing. We cradled them in our arms and ran out of the building,” said Nagendra.
Then, the duo summoned a crane and broke the wall of the hospital to clear the smoke. When two fire engines and a water tanker arrived, the hole in the wall turned out to be the access point for the firefighting. It took some time for the smoke to clear but thanks to constables Nagendra and Rajput, no one was hurt. A short circuit in the AC is believed to have started the fire.
