Woman drives with petrol nozzle in car, fire breaks out
Updated: 2019–06–01
MOHALI: A major tragedy was averted after a petrol dispenser got uprooted and caught fire when a woman drove her car before an attendant could finish filling up the tank of her vehicle at a petrol pump in Zirakpur on Friday.
According to a police complaint lodged by Puneet Bhardwaj, the owner of Shiv HP Centre petrol pump, two women came in a silver Maruti Alto car and asked Rajvir Kaur, an employee, to fill petrol worth Rs 1,000. The woman in the driver’s seat handed over a debit card to make the payment. The moment Rajvir handed back the debit card, the woman started her car and drove away, without noticing petrol was still being filled and the dispenser’s nozzle was inside the tank. As a result, the petrol dispensing machine got uprooted, with petrol flowing out. Electrical wires caused sparking and the dispenser caught fire. Panic gripped the outlet as the staff and other customers started running to save their lives. Rajvir Kaur along with other employees immediately used fire extinguishers to douse the fire.
Bhardwaj, in his complaint, alleged the woman caused damage to the petrol pump and must be traced and booked. “The driver was quite negligent. She drove away without noticing that petrol is still being dispensed in her car. It could have been a tragedy if the staff had not acted immediately. We have lodged a complaint with the police and demanded repair cost from the customer,” he said.

NO CCTV FOOTAGE
The petrol pump was under renovation due to installation of a CNG pump due to which all CCTV cameras were removed for re-installation, according to the owner. So, no CCTV footage could be recorded, police said. Employees also could not note down the registration number of the car. Police said details of the debit card have been handed over to the cybercrime cell to ascertain the identity and address of the woman driver. Police are in the process of registering an FIR.
