A former government official, his wife and son burnt to death and another son injured when a fire broke out at their flat in Khilgaon area of the capital Thursday morning.
Mohammad Siraj Ullah, 55, was a former deputy director of the primary and mass education ministry and a consultant of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), while Kaniz Fatema Koli, 45, was his wife.
Rashidul Hasan Sifat, 25, the elder son of the couple, succumbed to his critical injuries around 8:30pm at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Their younger son Masudul Hasan Sihad, 20, had minor injuries.
Both the brothers have been undergoing treatment at the burn unit of DMCH.
Doctors declared Koli dead following her admission at the hospital while Siraj succumbed to his injured around 1:00pm.
During his treatment at intensive care unit (ICU) doctors had stated the condition of Sifat critical as he sustained 95 percent burnt injuries, said Nazrul Islam, station officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence.
The fire broke out at the first floor of a six-storey building at Riazbagh of Khilgaon area around 6:00am, the fire service official said.
The reason of the fire could not be ascertained immediately.
The relatives of the victims said that the fire might be originated from an electric short circuit at the flat.
Locals heard a big bang in the morning and informed the fire men.
On information, fire fighters rushed to the spot and whisked off the victims to the DMCH, Nazrul added.
It is suspected that the fire might be originated from an electric short circuit at the flat, he informed.
“The TV in the couple’s bedroom was turned on, and I think the fire caused when the TV overheated,” Nazrul said.
A computer, electronic gadgets, ceiling fans seemed to have exploded while some of the furniture in the flat was also burnt.
Kaniz Fatema Koli’s brother-in-law Mohammad Elhamul Islam informed that the two injured brothers slept in separate rooms while the younger had friend staying over with him.
All household things were gutted to ashes inside the rooms, he added.
