Fire on second floor of NDMC building in CP

NEW DELHI: A fire broke out on the second floor of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) building in Connaught Place on Saturday evening. The fire department pressed in six fire tenders to control the blaze that was doused within an hour.
Fire officials said that no one was injured since the offices were closed for the weekend.
The fire department received a call at 6.36pm and five fire tenders were rushed to the spot immediately from the Connaught Place fire station. One more fire engine was deployed after gauging the intensity of the fire. Chief Fire Officer Atul Garg said that the blaze was brought under control by 7.15pm.
NDMC officials said that they noticed smoke coming out of one of the windows of the Palika Kendra. As the officials went inside to check, they noticed that there was a fire at the kitchen area, situated between the office room of JD (PGMS) and director (Municipal housing). The adjoining rooms also got affected due to this. The officials then informed the fire department.
Timely action prevented the fire from spreading to the other floors. NDMC officials said that there was no damage to any records or files kept in the offices. The floor also houses the office of the registrar of estates.
The fire department and police have initiated an inquiry into the cause of the blaze. According to them, prima facie probe suggests that it might have been caused by a short circuit triggered by the extreme temperature.
The offices on the floor have been sealed for inspection that will be conducted on Sunday, after which a clearance will be given for day to day work.
