Fire triggered by oil lorry burns Shyamoli filling station
Updated: 2019–06–18
Fire fighters have tamed the blaze at a petrol pump at Dhaka’s Shyamoli after about half an hour.
The fire stemmed from an oil lorry parked at Sahil Filling Station 5:30pm on Tuesday, according to the Fire Service and Civil Defence control room.
Ten fire-fighting units rushed to the scene and brought the blaze under control around 6pm.
“An oil lorry parked at the petrol pump suddenly caught fire. The flames spread to the station burning almost half of it,” said bdnews24.com photographer Abdullah Momin who was at the scene.
Traffic on the Gabtoli-bound lane on Mirpur Road halted due to the fire.
The situation normalised about 6:15pm, Adabor Police Station OC Kawsar Ali said.
“The oil lorry inside the filling station has been burnt, but the damage is not huge,” he added.
The fire started when workers were filling the station’s tank with oil from the lorry, Mohammadpur Fire Station official Ashraful Islam told bdnews24.com.
“Maybe someone was smoking there. Excessive heat or extra load may also have caused the fire. We can’t identify the reason before investigation,” he said when asked about the reason behind the fire.
Two large hospitals and many commercial buildings are situated near the filling station between Shyamoli and Kalyanpur bust stands.
“We feared for the hospitals, but the damage is not huge. Only the vehicle is burnt,” Ashraful said.
