Fire scare at Kolkata Hospital

KOLKATA: Fire scare on Monday evening caused panic among patients at MR Bangur Hospital. An air-conditioner unit caught fire in the dialysis ward of the hospital. The fire was extinguished by the hospital staff using fire fighting equipment installed in the hospital. No one was injured in the incident.
Around 7.30pm relatives of patients noticed spark at the outside unit of the AC machine installed at the dialysis unit. Within seconds the AC unit caught fire, smoke entered the room. According to sources in the hospital five patients were in the ward when the fire broke out – one had just undergone dialysis and the others were under the process or were waiting for their turn.
“While a group of hospital staff with the patients’ relatives evacuated the patients safely, another group started dousing the flame,” said a hospital source.
The hospital dialled the fire services meanwhile. By 7.45pm the fire was extinguished completely even before the fire tender arrived. Fire officials point short circuit as the cause of fire.
Dialysis services have been stalled after the fire. Fire personnel and PWD officials will conduct a thorough inspection on Tuesday morning to decide whether the services could be resumed.
“If we get a green signal, services will resume from Tuesday itself,” said a hospital official.
