Woman whose sari caught fire in Hubballi temple dies

HUBBALLI: A woman who sustained severe burn injuries while performing a religious ritual in a temple breathed her last late on Monday night at a private hospital.
The middle-aged woman suffered burns after her sari accidentally caught fire while performing puja on the occasion of Vata Purnima in Ashok Nagar police limits on June 17. Rashmi (name changed) a resident of Adarsha Nagar had gone to Vishwanath temple in Vishweshwar Nagar when the incident took place.
The unusual incident was captured by a CCTV camera in the temple.
The victim was returning to her home after worshipping a banyan tree located on the temple premises and she she that her sari had caught fire. Initially she tried to douse the fire using her hands but the fire spread quickly. She ran in to the temple to remove the sari and the devotees who were inside came out screaming. Within a few seconds some people rushed in to the temple and doused the fire.
The severely injured woman was rushed to KIMS Hospital’s burns unit. Doctors at the hospital said she was shifted to a private hospital against medical advice.
