Fire rages at bank before working hours
Updated: 2019–06–26
NEW DELHI: A fire was reported from a private in north Delhi’s Burari on Tuesday morning, which started before the bank was opened for the public.
Atul Garg, chief fire officer of Delhi Fire Service, said the incident was reported at 9.10am from a bank on 100 ft Road, following which five fire tenders were pressed into service. The blaze was brought under control after an hour’s operation.
People spotted the smoke coming out of the bank and alerted the fire service. By the time fire tenders reached the spot, huge flames had spread across the building. The firefighters, however, managed to fight back the blaze within 10 minutes and contained it from reaching the locker room and cash vault.
After the cooling operation, the officials found that several files kept in the counters and drawers were destroyed.
Though the exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, a preliminary probe revealed that a short circuit in the air conditioning system could have ignited the flames. The cops are checking the duration for which the air conditioners were in operation.
The bank officials are also being interviewed to ascertain the extent of damage caused.
A team of forensic experts also visited the site and have collected samples to investigate the cause of fire.
