ERODE: A mother-daughter duo were charred to death after their thatched hut near Thalavadi in the district caught fire in the early hours of Thursday. <br/>Police identified the deceased as N Rajammal and her daughter Geetha, 18, of Mallankuzhi village. Rajammal was living in a hut near her father’s house after her husband passed away 10 years ago.
“Around 4am on Thursday, Rajammal’s hut suddenly caught fire. Villagers and Rajammal’s family members tried to put out the fire, but in vain. The hut was gutted within a few minutes,” a police officer said, quoting villagers.
After villagers alerted the Thalavadi police, they reached the spot, recovered the bodies and sent them to the government hospital in Sathyamangalam for postmortem Preliminary investigation revealed that Rajammal had cooked in an earthen stove using wooden logs.
“The duo could have failed to put out the fire after cooking. Sparks might have hit the thatched roof and caused the incident,” the police officer said. The exact reason could be ascertained only after a thorough investigation, the officer added.
