Fire breaks out at two-storey building in Virar, no casualties reported
Updated: 2019–07–25
MUMBAI: A fire broke out in a two-storey building in Virar, that houses a children hospital, on Thursday at around 11am. No one was injured in the incident.
The fire broke out due to a short circuit in the meter box, located on the ground floor of Matru Krupa building in Virar (east).
The patients and visitors of Abhinav Children hospital, located on the second floor, were rushed to the terrace by locals.
The Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) fire brigade vehicle reached the spot and douzed the blaze. Firemen helped around 30 people, mostly women and small children, reach the terrace.
Fire officials said that the people on the first and second floors were rushed to the terrace, the door of which was open.
Fire officials, however, said that the terrace was covered with asbestos sheets, which could have not served the purpose had the smoke not been brought under control.
In the Vasai-Virar region, while terraces’ doors are left open, most of them are covered with asbestos and plastic sheets. The terraces are given away for marriage and other functions to outsiders for a cost. Even residents use the covered terrace for functions.
