Updated: 2019–07–28
MADURAI: Fire broke out in the store room of Holy Family Girls Higher Secondary School on Saturday. The cause of the fire is suspected to be electric short circuit. The fire damaged few items kept in the store room, but no one was injured. Though, it was Saturday, few students, who will be appearing for the board exams, had come to the school to attend special class when the fire broke out.
Few girls were attending class in the school ground when they and people of the locality noticed thick black smoke emitting from a room close to the office room at around 1.50 pm and alerted the Madurai fire and rescue services station. On information, the fire and rescue team reached the spot and started dousing the fire. Tense moments prevailed as parents, who thronged the school after the news spread on social media, found black smoke and assumed that it was a laboratory and the flames was fuelled by chemicals.
“It was only a store room. The fire damaged two bicycles that were to be distributed under the government scheme, old desks and benches, plastic chairs and a few textbooks,” station fire officer R Venkatesan said. Terming it a small fire, the officer said that the smoke was put out in a short time.
