Building catches fire, 40 spend 2 hours on terrace
Updated: 2019–07–29
GHAZIABAD: A short-circuit in electric meters installed in the basement of a four-storey building charred 18 cars and bikes and forced around 40 residents to spend tense two hours on the terrace.
Four cars, two Bullets and 12 others bikes were charred by the time fire fighters reached Ambuj City around 1.30am on Sunday. The building has 15 flats, of which 12 are occupied. Among the residents who were stuck on the terrace was a two-month-old girl. Some, however, jumped to the terrace of the adjacent building.
Residents alleged that the fire brigade reached the spot almost an hour after the blaze had started. Sunil Kumar Singh, the chief fire officer of Ghaziabad, said they got information around 1am on Sunday. Three fire tenders rushed to the spot and douse the flames within two hours.
JJ Pathak, a resident, said the fire started around midnight. “I got up and found that the house was full of smoke. Flames had engulfed the entire building and all the residents were going to the terrace. I took my two-month-old daughter to a private hospital as she could not breathe properly in the smoke. She is stable now,” he added.
