Mohali: Two electricity meter boxes catch fire, power snapped

MOHALI: In two separate incidents, two boxes of 18 electricity meters in Baltana and 16 at District Courts Complex in Sector 76 in Mohali caught fire on Monday.
In the first incident, 18 electricity meters’ box at Sadashiv Enclave, Ward Number 6, caught fire during afternoon. Residents were left sweating as electricity supply to as many as 18 households was snapped due to the fire.
Sadashiv Enclave residents claimed that power department officials arrived at the spot only after repeated calls. The fire brigade, on the other hand, reached the spot on time and doused the flames, added the residents. Junior engineer Ashish Yadav said, “Due to the sudden fire in the electricity meters’ box, residents had to face the consequences. The snapped power connections will become functional soon.”
In the second incident, 16 electricity meters’ box caught fire due to a short circuit at the District Court Complex in Sector 76, Mohali, around 12.30pm. As a result of the fire, electricity supply of around 220 chambers of the court was disrupted. The fire brigade reached the spot around 12.50pm and brought the situation under control.
Advocate Lovedeep Sarin, who has been working there since 2016, said, “The wiring system is not at all safe at the district court as the wires lie open posing a threat to all of us.’” According to the sources, the officials have complained and submitted letters to the electricity department twice to solve the issue. They have been hoping for better wirng and separate connections.
No one was reported to be injured in the two incidents.
