3 vehicles damaged as power distribution unit catches fire
Updated: 2019–08–05
PUNE: Three parked vehicles were damaged after a power distribution point caught fire in the early hours of Sunday in Gokhalenagar.
No one was injured in the incident, in which a truck and two autorickshaws were damaged.
Mahadev Chikmale, whose house was next to the unit, said it caught fire around 1am. “As soon as the fire broke out, electricity supply in the area was disrupted. My nephew, who was sleeping near the main door, noticed a light outside and alerted us,” Chikmale said.
The entire family rushed out and saw that the unit was on fire. “Within seconds, fire engulfed three vehicles parked nearby,” he said.
The fire brigade rushed to the spot and put out the fire. “Our entire colony had no power till Sunday evening, as MSEDCL was still carrying out repairs,” Chikmale added.
Mohammed Khan, whose autorickshaw completely damaged in the fire, said, “I am the sole bread winner in the family … I do not know how I will get the money for repairs.”
Chikmale said he had noticed water seeping into the distribution box due to the downpour over the past few days. “The unit was located on the footpath. It had become risky — our children walked by it every day. We have been requesting the authorities to shift it away from our houses, but no one listens to us,” Chikmale said.
