Mysuru: 10 shops gutted at Devaraja market, no casualty

 Updated: 20190812

MYSURU: Around 10 shops were gutted after a fire broke out at the 130-year-old Devaraja market in the city on Monday afternoon. However, no casualty was reported as shop owners and customers were evacuated from the building.

Devaraja market is one of the busiest markets in the city where people visit to buy daily items. The fire started at the shops which sell puja items like kumkum, turmeric powder, camphor, abarbathies and cotton. The shops which caught fire are at the entrance of the market which faces the busy Sayyaji Rao road.

The fire which started in a puja items shop at 3.30pm immediately spread to neighbouring fruits and vegetable shops. As the fire started to engulf the place, the vendors and the public ran out of the building.

As soon as the fire service department received the message, five tenders were pressed into the service. Two fire engines and a mini fire engine from Saraswathipuram fire station and two from Bannimantap fire station were used to douse the blaze. After two hours, the fire was brought under control.

Mysuru City Corporation assistant commissioner additional commissioner MN Shashikumar, who rushed to the market to monitor the situation, told TOI that initial report suggest that the fire may have caused due to short circuit.

After the fire personnel brought the fire under control, the shop owners have started resetting their shops,” he said.
