Updated: 20190818

NASHIK: One of the oldest cinema halls in the city, Anuradha cinema located on the Nashik road caught fire on Saturday.

The fire brigade personnel of Nashik Road had to bring four fire tenders into service to bring down the fire. According to the fire-fighting officials, the loss is estimated to be around Rs three lakh.

The fire officials said that since the cinema hall was closed for close for seven to eight years now, they were not much material inside it.

At around 10.15 am residents and passers-by in the Nashik Road area saw fire emanating from the closed cinema hall after which they immediately reported the incident to the fire brigade office on Nashik Road.

Officials informed that they got a call at 10.29 am, after which four fire tenders were pressed into service to quell the fire. The fire fighting continued for over an hour to extinguish the fire completely.

There were a few machineries inside the cinema hall which were damaged in the fire. The fire officials said that the cause of the fire could not be ascertained. As there was no electricity supply inside the theatre the reason of an electrical short circuit could be ruled out.

Residents of Nashik Road said that since the cinema hall is closed for a long time, some road-side people could be using it for sleeping for the night, drinking liquor, etc. someone must have left a burning cigarette inside which could have caused the fire.

Some recollected that they watched movie ‘Nagin’ starring Sunil Dutt, which was the first movie at the cinema hall in 1976. The huge screen of the cinema hall was an attraction for many in those years and people from all over the district used to come to the cinema hall to watch movies.
