Fire in flood-hit home causes Rs 10 lakh damages
Updated: 2019–08–20
KOLHAPUR: A fire broke out in a house after a lit candle sparked a blaze in a refrigerator at Alas village in Shirol taluka on Saturday night. The fire caused damaged worth Rs 10 lakh.
The fire also spread to two adjacent homes, however, there were no casualties.
Fire tenders were deployed immediately and the firemen were able to douse the blaze in time.
The house belonged to one Munaf Gaus Jaina. The homeowners and other villagers were relocated when the floodwaters had entered their houses in the first week of August. They had just returned home on Saturday.
“The power supply here was cut off due to the floods and we had to light candles to do house cleaning work on Saturday evening. We kept one candle lit on the top of the refrigerator and went to bed. At midnight, we woke to loud noise from the fridge and it on fire. We immediately ran outside the house for our personal safety and raised alarm for help,” said a member of the Jaina family.
The fire tenders from neighbouring Shree Datta Sugar Factory, in Shirol, reached on the location to fight the blaze.
Ranjeet Chile, the chief fire officer of the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation, said, “There are minimal chances of a fridge catching fire due to gas leakage. The gas used in the refrigerators does not catch fire. However, most parts of a refrigerator are made of plastic, which can catch fire. In this case, we suspect the candle kept on the fridge may have burnt the plastic. The fire might have caused the compressor to burst.”
“We appeal to the people, whose houses were damaged due to the floods, to take precautions before restarting electric and electronic appliances. They should dry these appliances and take them to local electricians and technicians to check that they are in functional condition. Only after confirming this should they handle these appliances. Otherwise, there is always a possibility of a similar mishap,” he said.
