Updated: 20190921

JAIPUR: The major fire that broke in Kafka, a rooftop restaurant Kafka situated at Tonk Road on Friday morning, created panic among people in the surrounding areas.

According to officials at Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC), the restaurant did not have a fire NOC, though its owner claimed that they had already applied for it.

Abha Beniwal, fire DC at JMC, told TOI there were more than 70 rooftop restaurants in the city and none of them had a fire NOC. “We have given notices to many such rooftop restaurants. Kafka did not have a fire NOC, but they claimed they had applied for it, which we have to confirm. Our fire officials went to the inspect the place to check whether they had proper fire-fighting equipment. If fire equipment are not in place, will seize the restaurant immediately,” said Beniwal.

Chief fire officer Jagdish Phulwaria said there were fire equipment at place, but none of the workers present at that time was trained to use them. “They should have trained the workers to use the equipment. Though the owners are claiming that they have applied for the NOC, but I have not received any kind of application from them. We have given them notice to attain the NOC within a week or the place will be sealed,” said Jagdish.

To get a fire NOC, a building needs urban development tax receipts, copies of approved map, lease clearance and fire prevention outlets. A restaurant must have a house pipe with underground tank, a smoke detector, water sprinklers, fire alarms, exit doors and exit staircase to rescue people in case of emergency.

There have been many attempts in the past to curb these restaurants, but due to support by powerful people even JMC authorities are reluctant to take action against them. We were literally waiting for a tragedy to happen,” said a JMC official on the condition of anonymity.
