Updated: 2019–10–03
COIMBATORE: A major fire broke out at a jewellery complex on Raja Street on the intervening night between Tuesday and Wednesday. While silver ornaments and wooden furniture were damaged, no one was hurt in the incident. The cause of fire is yet to be ascertained.
Fire and rescue services personnel said they were alerted about the fire at 11.30pm on Tuesday. “Around six fire engines were deployed to bring the flames under control. As heavy smoke emanated from the building, we could enter it only around 9am on Wednesday,” a fire and rescue services official said.
The official said the damaged silver objects could be melted and recast. “But the wooden furniture such as showcases were completely gutted.”
He said police were investigating as to what triggered the fire. “They are also assessing the extent of damage.”
