Updated: 2019–10–06
KOTA: A massive fire, on the ground floor of students’ hostel, was caused by a short circuit in the newly installed lift on Saturday in Nayanohara under Borekheda police station area of Kota city. Two students had to jump from the first floor. Around 12 students were injured in the incident, police said.
Police have lodged a case under relevant sections of IPC against the hostel’s two proprietors and investigation is underway. “Most of the injured students were discharged after primary medical care and two of them are undergoing treatment,” Borekheda SI Sanjay Singh said.
The hostel accommodates 80 students from various parts of the country. Around 30 of them had gone to attend classes when the fire broke out at 6.30am on Saturday.
“The fire broke out in the reception area of the hostel on Saturday. Three fire tenders and a rescue team controlled the flames within 45 minutes,” assistant fire officer (KMC) Devendra Gautam said.
A major portion of the reception was engulfed by flames but was controlled in time, the officer said, adding that two students, in fear of being caught by flames, jumped from first floor and one of them reportedly sustained a critical spinal injury while another suffered a minor burn injury.
Around 12 students were in the canteen in basement and others were in their rooms at the time of mishap, the fire officer said, adding that 50 students were rescued through ladders.
