Five killed in Dibrugarh house fire

Updated: 20191020

DIBRUGARH: Five people, including four of a family, were killed after their house caught fire in Thermal Niz Kadamoni area of Dibrugarh town on Saturday.

According to locals, the fire broke out at around 1.30am in the house of local resident Krishna Sonar. All the family members were sleeping at that time. Sonar, who works as a nightwatchman, was not at home when the incident took place. The site of incident is close to a railway track which runs parallel to NH-37.

Those killed were Sonars 50-year-old wife Maya Devi, younger son Bishal Sonar, two grandsons – three-year-old Shankar Sonar and five-year-old Sibu Sonar – and 30-year-old Nunu, who worked as a house help.

As per initial investigation, the fire may have been triggered by a burning candle. The house was made of inflammable materials like bamboo, wood and tarpaulin. The family members were in deep sleep and they got trapped. The fire led to the explosion of LPG cylinders, resulting in further damage, Dibrugarh SP Gautam Borah said.

The fire soon spread to two other houses but the occupants of the other houses escaped unharmed. Three fire tenders battled for nearly two hours to bring the fire under control.

Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal has expressed his deepest condolences over the incident and directed the district administration to conduct an inquiry. He also issued instructions to release an ex gratia amount of Rs 4 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased.
