MUMBAI: One person died and six were injured–including three firemen after a major fire broke out in a ground-plus-five storey commercial building—Aditya Arcade– at Grant Road (East) on Sunday morning. 10 people were rescued safely.

The firefighting system of the building was not working. The fire brigade will inquire about the cause of fire and violations in the building. They also asked the BMC to examine the occupation certificate (OC) of the building. The fire started around 6am and spread on building’s ground and first floor. People on upper floors—mostly employees-were trapped in the building. Eye-witnesses stated that 10 survivors managed to make a narrow escape either rushing to the terrace or upper floors.

The staircase and grills on the top floors acted as big obstruction for those trapped to escape the fire. Fortunately, because it was a Sunday, not many people were inside the building”, said Manish Bafna, who owns a shop in the building.

Firemen managed to rescue ten persons trapped on the upper floor with the help of ladder. Chief fire officer PS Rahangdale said, We used recently procured handy cutter to cut grills to rescued people from the upper floors of the building.

One of the office-godown–Systematic Imports—occupies entire first floor of the building and they suffered losses worth crores as all the material stored inside burnt in the fire said an eye-witness. 150 firemen took 12 hours to put the fire under control at 6 pm on Sunday with the help of 16 fire engines.

The building which had about 80 shops-godown-office, mostly electronic supplies stores, is one of the most prized estates on Lamington Road.
