Fire breaks out after leakage in Patna’s PNG supply line

Updated: 20191031

PATNA: A fire broke out in the piped natural gas (PNG) supply line because of leakage near the Government Boys’ School at Shastri Nagar in the state capital on Wednesday. The fountain of fire resulting from high pressure gas gushing out of the leakage continued for at least 20 minutes and created panic in the area.

This was the first incident since the PNG supply line has been laid for cooking gas to households in Patna under the Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga Yojana. The project is being handled by Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL). A team led by fire officer Sadhna Kumari from Sachivalya fire station reached the spot and doused the flame through a foam-enabled fire tender.

Sadhna told TOI the valve of the leaked pipeline was immediately shut. The cause of fire could not be ascertained, she said.

Shastri Nagar SHO Vimlendu said there were high-voltage wires above the leakage point of the pipeline. “It is suspected that a spark from one of the wires over the leakage point might have resulted the fire,” he said.

Altogether three fire tenders were rushed to the spot after getting information.

When contacted, GAIL‘s city gas distribution deputy general manager Rajneesh Kumar told TOI over phone that the pipeline was damaged due to reckless and unauthorized digging by a heavy equipment there, causing leakage. “Someone seemed to have burned garbage near the leakage spot which had finally resulted in the fire,” he said.

When asked, Kumar said there is no sensor system to alert the authorities about leakage at any point in the pipeline, but GAIL’s control room keeps functioning 24X7.
