Indore: Fire in tyre godown spreads panic in hospital
Updated: 2019–10–30
INDORE: Panic gripped Apple Hospital in Bhanwarkuan area on Monday night after a fire broke out in a tyre remolding godown behind the hospital.
The fire started at 10:30 pm. Since the godown was just behind the hospital, the building was filled with smoke. Over two dozen members of Sikh community, who had reached the hospital to meet Hardeep Singh whose family had met with an accident at Ganpati Ghat in the evening, informed fire department about the incident.
Fire officials along with Bhanwarkuan and Juni Indore police reached the spot. As the news about the incident spread, senior police and administrative officials too reached the spot to take stock of the situation.
Serious patients were evacuated from the hospital and rushed to other private hospitals nearby. But it took a lot of time to call ambulances from different hospitals to take the patients. Over 45 were admitted on five floors of the hospital.
A major incident was averted as patients were evacuated on time. The fire had engulfed back portion of the building and it took over 12 hours to douse the flames.
Fire sub-inspector Shivnarayan Sharma said that they first informed the hospital staff and evacuated the patients, while the other team was trying to get the fire under control.
Sharma said that since the godown was filled with tyres, the fire was spreading rapidly in the area.
Some of the patients, who were on ventilator were also rushed outside on stretchers, and were kept waiting in lobby until ambulances arrived. Family members of some patients also made arrangement to move them to different hospital in their private vehicles.
Bhanwarkuan police station in charge Sanjay Shukla said that all 45 patients were evacuated. “We first rushed three critical patients to three nearby hospitals. The patients were brought down in lift with entire machinery attached and then sent to the hospital safely,” he said.
