Night-long blaze destroys garment store on Park Street, none injured

KOLKATA: A fire broke out at a popular garment store on Park Street in the early hours of Thursday, leading to a scare among residents of nearby apartments. Though none was injured, the fire continued for more than seven hours till Thursday morning. Seven fire tenders were on the spot to douse the flames.
A forensic team visited the spot on Thursday morning to ascertain the cause of the fire.
The flames were spotted at the Anaahi store, located on the second floor of 48A Park Street building, around 1.05am. Initially, two fire tenders were pressed into action but five more were called in after they failed to douse the flames. Firefighters, however, said none was trapped in the building during the fire.
A local said he heard a loud noise and later heard people screaming that there was a fire. “I saw thick smoke bellowing out. By then, the fire was ravaging. I came out of my house. Later, we learnt the firefighters had a tough time in dousing the flames,” said Kishan Raj, a witness.
“Only one shop was affected because of the prompt intervention of the fire and police personnel,” a police officer said. Some saris were gutted in the flames. Some of the adjacent buildings — which are residential — were sprayed water to cool them. Police had to put up guardrails to cordon off the building.
“We did not need to divert vehicles as it was late in the night and traffic on Park Street was already less,” a police officer said. Fire department officials said they were yet to ascertain the cause of fire. Police will start a probe into the case once the fire department lodges a plaint.
