Updated: 2019–11–27
CHENNAI: A massive fire broke out in the wee hours of Tuesday at a plastic pipe manufacturing firm at Sidco industrial estate in Kodungaiyur, destroying plastic items.
Police said the single storey building on Sidco Nagar Second Main Road belongs to a man called Vignesh of Kodungaiyur. A steel distribution firm, marriage vessels rental shop and a furniture outlet are located on the ground floor. On the first floor, some people were into plastics recycling and manufacturing of pipes.
Around 2am, smoke emanated from the first floor and a security guard in a nearby residential complex alerted the residents.
The fire control room was informed and fire tenders from Vyasarpadi, Korukkupet, Washermenpet, Manali, Madhavaram, Vepery and Egmore rushed to the spot. As many as 10 water tankers from the Metrowater station in Madhavaram and Manali were also brought to the spot. After battling for nearly five hours, the firefighters put out the blaze.
Fortunately, there were no casualties as the flames broke out early in the morning before the employees came in.
The Kodungaiyur police, who registered a case, are trying to ascertain the cause behind the blaze. Preliminary inquiries revealed that a short circuit could have caused the blaze. The fire and rescue services department personnel said it took a long time to control the smoke as all the goods destroyed were plastic items. Furniture and pipes were also damaged.
