Odisha: Three minor girls charred to death

Updated: 20191201

BHAWANIPATNA: Three minor girls – a pair of twins and their cousin – died in a fire mishap at Bijmara village (Koksara police station limits) in Kalahandi district on Saturday.

The deceased twins and the cousin have been identified as Daji Dishari, Raji Dishari and Rachana Rout, respectively.

A fire broke out place when the three kids, who were around four years old, were playing inside a makeshift hut near a paddy threshing ground close to their home. The hut was covered with paddy stubble which is combustible in nature.

A woman from the village, Vishakha, said coal ash beside the hut may have caught fire. The residents may have burning coal to beat the cold. The children were screaming when the fire broke out. They could not come out as the wooden gate of the makeshift hut were on fire. Locals rushed them to the Koksara community health centre where primary treatment was given, Vishakha added. All three were shifted to the government headquarters hospital in Bhawanipatna when their condition deteriorated. Dr B Deo said the deceased suffered more than 90 per cent burn injuries. They succumbed to the injuries after one hour of treatment here, he added.

The grandfather of the deceased, Parikhit Disari, said the parents were working in the field to harvest the ripen paddy.

The bodies were sent for postmortem and Koksara police have registered a case regarding the incident.
