Updated: 2019–12–04
NEW DELHI: A 45-year-old man was charred to death after a major fire broke out at a thread godown in Tughlaqabad area in southeast Delhi late on Monday. The deceased identified as Master worked as a cashier at the godown.
The blaze, which occurred around 12.30 am, also damaged properties in an adjacent plastic waste godown. It took the fire personnel around 12 hours and the help of 39 fire tenders to bring the situation under control. The three-storey godown did not have a valid fire no objection certificate (NOC).
As many as six people, who lived in the plot next to the godown, were safely rescued. Prima facie, it appears that a short circuit caused the fire. Plastic and paper waste probably served as fuel to the fire.
A case was later registered in this regard, and the owner of the godown—Saleem arrested. One of the firefighters identified as Dayaram was injured as a cemented roof fell on him during the operation.
The fire was finally brought under control by around 5.40 am, after which the cooling operations began. It continued till about 1 pm on Tuesday.
