Uttar Pradesh: One killed, 10 injured in house fire in Mathura

Updated: 20191208

AGRA: One woman was killed and 10 people were injured in a fire that broke out at a three-storey house in Mathura’s Goranagar colony in the early hours on Sunday.

The condition of two injured women was stated to be critical.

A preliminary inquiry had suggested that the fire was caused due to a short circuit in the electrical wiring. Fire officials said that smoke inhalation and suffocation caused by it were the reasons behind the death and the injuries to the victims.

According to police, the fire broke out around 3.30am when all the residents of the building were asleep. The house is owned by Jagdish Prasad, who lives and does stitching work on the first floor, where the blaze had erupted. His daughters-in-law, Rekha, Jyoti, and Pinky, were critically injured in the mishap. They were earlier taken to the district hospital, from where the doctors referred them to a private hospital for better treatment.

While Rekha died during treatment, the other two women are being kept under observation as they might be suffering from lung swelling due to smoke inhalation. Eight persons, including five minor children, who were injured during the mishap are admitted at the district hospital for the treatment.

Police said that while the first and second floor of the building were being used for residential purpose, a temple is built on the ground floor.

Talking to TOI, chief fire officer in Mathura, Pramod Sharma, said the short circuit in the electricity wiring sparked off the blaze on the first floor and soon the narrow staircase connecting the second floor was filled with smoke, making the escape of the residents difficult.

He added that the firemen took almost half-an-hour to complete the rescue operation and dousing the fire.
