The fire incident caused panic among the devotees as thick smoke engulfed the region within minutes.
Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams’ vigilance and security wing officials immediately alerted the fire services department which rushed two fire tenders to the main temple complex area to contain the raging fire from spreading to other buildings in the vicinity.
Meanwhile, pilgrims near the Additional Potu area were evacuated and shifted to safety by the vigilance and security wing of the TTD.
The temple administration has launched an enquiry into the fire mishap at the Boondi Potu and are yet to ascertain the reasons that led to the incident.
According to preliminary information, a potu worker was pouring oil into a large vessel which spilled over and led to the fire. A strong breeze drifted flames from the stove to the walls of the Boondi Potu which caught fire immediately because of the ghee and oil residues accumulated on the walls. Though the potu workers immediately switched off the stoves, the fire further spread to the ceiling and the walls on the top of the building from inside and was uncontrollable until fire tenders reached the spot.
