At least one dead, dozens injured in plastics factory fire in Dhaka’s Keraniganj

At least one person has been killed and 32 others have been injured in a plastics factory fire at Keraniganj in Dhaka, according to officials.
As many as 10 units of the Fire Service and Civil Defence brought the blaze at the Prime Pet and Plastic Industries Limited factory in Chunkutia area under control around 5:45pm on Wednesday after it originated around 4:30pm, fire service Director General Sazzad Hussain told the media.
Keraniganj Fire Station’s Senior Officer Md Saiful Islam said the fire crews had pulled one body from the factory.
The victim could not be identified immediately.
Saiful could not confirm how many people had been injured.
“They are being sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital and other hospitals,” he said.
There was no other dead body inside the factory, fire service Deputy Director Kazi Nazmuzzaman said.
A total of 32 people were admitted to the DMCH’s National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, Bachchu Mia, an inspector at the police camp there, told bdnews24.com.
“Some of them are in critical condition,” he added, quoting doctors.
The authorities could not immediately determine the cause of the fire.
South Keraniganj Police Station OC Shah Zaman told bdnews24.com the fire crews were dumping the burnt things in the factory.
It was still unclear how the fire originated, he said.
The company, owned by Nazrul Islam, used the tin-roofed factory to produce one-time plates and cups.
