 Updated: 20191212

CHENNAIFire crackers bursted during the Karthigai Deepam festival triggered four fire accidents in the city since Tuesday. The blazes occured at Kancheepuram, ThiruvottiyurKasimedu and Velachery.

A woman died of burns, when her house in Velachery caught fire from a deepam she had lit on Tuesday.

In another incident, a commercial complex in Kancheepuram was gutted in the wee hours of Wednesday. A godown containing resin and sponge made the blaze worse. No one was injured in the accident. Police said the godown was owned by Radha Krishnan of Kancheepuram. He owns a foam shop on Gandhi Road. He had turned the third floor into a godown and stored most of his foam materials there.

On Tuesday, around 9pm Radha Krishnan closed the shop and returned home. Around 10.30pm many residents called him after they spotted smoke bellowing out of the third floor of the building.

The fire and rescue team doused the fire after an hour. Police said that many people were bursting crackers onthe occasion of the Karthigai Deepam festival and a rocket fell into the godown causing the fire. Police said foams worth several lakhs were gutted in the fire. Vishnu Kanchi police have registered a case.

In another incident at Thiruvottiyur, at least 13 cattle suffered burn injuries after fire engulfed a thatched hut where these animals were tied up. Twenty hens were killed in the blaze. In another incident, fire gutted a portion of a garbage segregation unit at Kasimedu late on Tuesday night.
