Madurai departmental store destroyed in fire

MADURAI: Goods worth a few crores of rupees were gutted in a fire that broke out at a departmental store in Narayanapuram in Madurai city on Sunday night. The fire destroyed the two-storey building of Sri Bharathi Stores.
The fire in the 7000-square-foot building was noticed around 11.40pm by a resident in the area, around 30 minutes after the store was closed on Sunday night. A fire tender from Tallakulam reached the spot in just five minutes and began firefighting.
As the intensity of the fire was assessed to be a major one, another fire tender from Tallakulam was also rushed to the spot. Soon fire tenders from Anupanadi, Thideer Nagar and the high court also joined the operation.
Two Vajra vehicles belonging to the Madurai city police and water tanker trucks of the Madurai Corporation were used to transport water to the spot.
The fire was brought under control by around 3.30am, and it was extinguished by 7am.
The reason for the fire was not known, officials said.
“The proprietor of the departmental store has stated that things worth Rs 3 crore and the building worth Rs 1.5 crore were gutted,” an official said.
The Tallakulam police would register a case and conduct an inquiry, officials said.
