Madurai: Goods worth a few crores of rupees were gutted in a major fire that broke out at a departmental store in Narayanapuram in the city on Sunday night.

The fire, which broke out at the two-storey 7000sqft building of Sri Bharathi Stores was noticed by a resident around 11.40pm, 30 minutes after it was closed on Sunday night.

A fire tender from Tallakulam reached the spot in just five minutes and began firefighting. As the intensity of the fire was assessed to be a major one, another fire tender from Tallakulam was also rushed to the spot. Soon fire tenders from AnupanadiThideer Nagar and the high court also joined the operation.

Two Vajra vehicles belonging to the Madurai city police and water tanker trucks of the Madurai Corporation were used to transport water to the spot.

The fire was brought under control by around 3.30am, and it was extinguished by 7am. The reason for the fire was not known, officials said.

An official from the fire and rescue services said that in total five fire tenders and one emergency rescue tender (ERT) were involved in fire-fighting

Another official said the building was completely burnt to ashes. “The proprietor of the departmental store has stated that things worth Rs 3 crore and building worth Rs 1.5 crore were gutted. We are yet to assess the damage,” he said.
