MUMBAI: The fire brigade rescued 20 people, including two disabled women and a senior citizen, who had moved up to the terrace after a fire broke out on the fifth floor of a highrise in Ghatkopar on Tuesday evening.

Two residents, Lata Bhatia (85) and Milind Warankar (45), suffered from suffocation and are recuperating in hospital. Their condition is stable, said doctors.

Around 5.30pm, the fire brigade received a call about the blaze at Shreeji Tower.

Four fire engines, three jumbo water tankers and one ambulance were rushed to the spot, but by then the flames had spread through the electric wiring, fridge, television, washing machine, false ceiling from flat number 501 to flat number 601 on the floor above, said officials.

Firemen mobilized two fire-fighting jets from inside the building and one from outside using an aerial ladder. They also brought the 20 residents stranded on the terrace out of the building using the staircase.

Chief fire officer PS Rahangdale said they will investigate the cause of the fire and if there were any fire safety violations in the highrise.

Officers claimed that the fire had started in the flat owned by Niraj Vaid.

Former corporator Pravin Cheda confirmed that the fire was brought under control.
