Spark from welding work could have triggered fire

RAJKOT: The fire that broke out in the bulk methanol storage tank near Kandla Port in Kutch district on Monday afternoon was still raging on Tuesday. Sources said that spark from welding like work on the tank could have triggered the explosion and the resultant fire that killed four men.
Kutch district collector Praveena D K told TOI: “We are awaiting the for final report but according to preliminary assessment some welding work was being done on the upper surface of the tank which could have triggered the fire.” Usually, the maintenance work is done after the tank is emptied but it was not regular kind of maintenance work.
The bulk chemical tanks near the methanol tank were emptied as a precautionary measure. Fire officials said that the blaze was under control but will be completely doused only by Wednesday morning. Eight fire tenders were still engaged in dousing the fire.
The four killed in the fire were identified as Sanjay Vagh, Sanjay Sahu, Darshan Rai and Omprakash Regar. Their bodies were charred beyond recognition.
The bulk storage tanks belong to IMC group and contained about 200 metric tonne of methanol when the fire broke out on Monday.
