JAIPUR: Three labourers were killed and three others were injured after a fire broke out at an under-construction building in Anita Colony area near Gandhi Nagar railway station here on Tuesday evening. All the three died of suffocation and did not sustain major burn injuries, a doctor at the Jaipuria Hospital said.
The incident took place at 8.15pm when the six labourers were working in the building where wooden interior work was in progress, police said. Five of the six, who were working on the fifth floor, were trapped inside the building as its doors, woodworked walls and false ceiling caught fire. The sixth, who was on the first floor, managed to come out of the building with minor burn injuries, they added.
A team of senior police officers and three fire tenders rushed to the spot. “We used ropes and other equipment to bring the trapped labourers out of the building while continuing our efforts to douse the fire,” said Devang, assistant fire officer.
By 8.45pm all the five trapped labourers were taken out. “None of them had grave burn injuries and they, along with the sixth, were rushed to the Jaipuria and SMS hospitals. Three of them were unconscious when they were rescued from the building,” said a senior police officer.
At the Jaipuria hospital, the three unconscious labourers — identified as Azhar, Nizam and Saurabh — succumbed.
“None of them had grave burn injuries and prima facie it appears that they died of suffocation as they were unable to have enough oxygen. Also carbon dioxide got into their windpipe, which blocked their respiratory tract,” said a doctor at Jaipuria.
Two other injured labourers were undergoing treatment at SMS hospital. Their condition is said to be critical. The one who had managed to come out on his own, was sent home after first aid.
Fire officials got the nearby buildings evacuated and the fire was doused by 9.15pm.
Police said a case of causing death due to negligence would be registered against the owner of the building.
